Here is the box office report for the weekend of March 6th, 2009.
Warner Bros. Pictures' Watchmen topped the domestic box office, but due to its 2-hour-40-minute running time and less showings, it was held back a bit. The graphic novel adaption earned an estimated $55.7 million from 3,611 theaters, for an average of $15,413 per venue. It marks the third-highest March opening of all time, following only Snyder's own 300 ($70.9 million) and Ice Age: The Meltdown ($68 million). This opening is also th sixth-best opening for an R-rated feature. Watchmen also topped the international box-office, with $27.5 million from 5,097 theaters in 45 markets. It has earned $83.2 million worldwide.
Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail added $8.8 million in second place, bringing its total to $76.5 million after three weeks.
20th Century Fox's Taken, with Liam Neeson, climbed from fourth to third with $7.5 in its sixth weekend. The action flick has collected a total of $118 million.
Fox Searchlight's Slumdog Millionaire had a 42.4% drop in sales for the first time, but made $6.9 million in its 17th week in theaters. The Oscar winner, produced for about $15 million, is now up to $125.4 million.
Columbia Pictures' Paul Blart: Mall Cop moved back up into the top five, with $4.2 million. The comedy, made for $26 million, has earned $133.6 million after eight weeks.
